DIRECTORS, Cutoff Times, etc.

Several times a day I review my e'mails and ridecamp. Many issues that
are discussed here are of interest and are timely. BUT, I have never
understood why so many folks gripe, complain, and point fingers, but
don't take positive action to try to change things they feel are wrong.
Nominations for Regional Directors ended at midnight October 1. Want to
guess how many of our 8 old regions are going to have elections? Three,
yes I said 3! The NE, West, and SE will actually have elections. AND,
this lack of nominations is more the norm than unusual. Remember our
Director at Large nominations last year? It may be hard since we did not
need to have an election as only eight (8) people nominated (we only
elect 8 at large directors). Fortunately for our membership, everyone on
the AERC Board is positive, educated on the needs of AERC and Endurance,
and loves and cares for our sport. Now, what does this tell you. or the
AERC Board? I suppose this could be interpreted several ways, which are
listed below:

1) People like to talk but they don't want to get involved.

2) The members in the five regions that won't have an election
like and support the Directors they have and think they
are doing a good job of protecting our sport and it's members.

Several times over the last few years I have written articles for the EN
urging people to nominate for the Board and for Board members to nominate
for elected offices. Choice is necessary for any organization to remain
healthy. Unfortunately, very few folks feel the need to donate some of
their time to actually be a positive force for AERC. Every member of AERC
has the opportunity and right to help shape the direction of our
organization but most of you just don't get involved. I suppose griping
and complaining , getting "it" off your chest, makes you feel better. I
am probably wrong more times than I am right, but I can say from
experience, actually doing something, being involved, is a much greater
feeling.

As to CUTOFF TIMES. When your October issue of EN arrives, read Jim
Rogan's article/letter in reference to the Protest & Grievance
Committee's position on a protest involving a cutoff time. I have been a
member of the P&G Committee for 5 years and I believe this decision, and
Jim's ability to explain the P&G's position in writing, is absolutely the
most significant decision I have seen. In absolute terms it defines the
position and responsibility of Ride Managers, Veterinarians, and
Riders......and the simple, basic fundamental right of the horse and
rider team to 12 or 24 hours to finish a ride.
