We used to use the St Croit eventers on Hal. They lasted three weeks. I
would typically have a spare set and pull the old ones off after three
weeks and plonk the new set on with minimal clean up using a slightly
larger nail in the same nail holes. The ferrier would only need to come
by one every six weeks then.

The current Al, Ti, Mg shoes last about the same as the steel shoes,
perhaps a week longer.

One way to improve life on the shoes is to use borium as you'd
mentioned, but that seemed to make Hal slip and slide on some surfaces,
or studs.
