Dare I suggest that along with a weight gain, you lost general
physical fitness that affected your riding abilities? And four years of
not competing caused you to become a bit "rusty" ?? Those things
generally go hand-in-hand.

Forgive this newbie for jumping in (though you all know by now
that I have a hard time staying quiet :) ... but I can state with
assurance that I would be much less interested in this sport if it
involved a complicated handicapping system, lots of rules, a strong
emphasis on racing to win, etc. The freedom from restriction, loose
structure and overall relaxed attitude that I perceive in endurance riding
(at least that is my impression from the participants on this list) are
major attractions for me -- and the main reasons I'm training for my first
endurance ride rather than my first CTR.
