How to get started?

I'm hoping someone can give me some helpful hints on how one might get
involved in the sport of endurance racing.

My background is as follows: I rode a great deal as a teenager and in
college, mainly in equestrian / huntseat competition. Then for several
years I gave up riding and concentrated on my career, which took me
travelling too much to own a horse or focus on riding. Now I'm looking to
"settle" in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and would like to take up
some type of "horse sport" again. I've been reading about endurance racing
and am very intriqued - it seems that it would be a perfect way to enjoy
the outdoors riding and compete in long races. (Along the way I've found
that I enjoy marathoning - the people kind, that is). I also am excited
about the idea of training together with your horse for stamina and
endurance - the "combined athlete" concept.

My questions are:
-- Is it possible to get involved, train and learn about the sport before
making an investment in a horse(s)?
-- Can anyone recommend trainers in the Maryland/ Northern Virginia area?

Thanks.
