For those who would like to "illuminate" their surroundings a bit, have
you considered shining RED light instead?

When I worked as a wrangler/packer in the east Sierras, we had no choice
but to pack at night in quarter moon, new moon, etc. When my reliable
mare 'Lee needed a day off, I usually rode on of the "newer" horses to
lead the string and train him/her at the same time. I would hook up two
military flashlights I picked up at the surplus store to the horse's
chest collar, and place the red lens over the bulb. Gave me plenty of
illumination to keep the new horse from tree-wrapping the string or
going off trail, and didn't blind anyone either. The horses in camp
also seemed to care less about the red light when catching them,
switching bells, etc., so it probably helped their eyes out also.

What's also nice about those military flashlights is that they are
weatherproof, have sturdy clips and rings, extra bulbs... worth the
extra $$$ compared to the household type, IMHO.
