Night Riding

Just starting doing some night riding in preparation for 100's in the future.
I am amazed by the sureness with which my mare travels in the pitch dark.
Occasionally I will turn on a flashlight for my own visibility and then
shut it off once assured. Can anyone tell me how this affects the horse's
vision? I don't notice a significant difference in her when I turn the
light off. When I turn it on, her head usually jumps up a little as
from being startled, but it doesn't seem to bother her.

Is there a veterinary-type person who can tell me what happens to the
horse's eyes when light is introduced in this environment? Also, any
shared night experiences would be welcomed.

Thanks, Joyce
