If you have poor depth perception, it is particularly difficult to judge
just how far it is to the ground, as I have discovered on several
subsequent occasions.

After some success doing the emergency dismounts to a standing position
facing forward so I could move a few steps with the horse, I had a false
sense of confidence. One day in Washington on a runaway TB in an
inadequate hackamore in the open, I decided to bail to a standing
position. Hit the ground on my feet, facing forward, reins in my
hand...and SLAMMED to the ground on my left side. Whoops...all that
momentum, perhaps 25 mph. I coughed up blood for an hour on that one.

Ride and learn! <g>
