I too have a pedometer, which I have never used with a horse, simply=20
because the validity of its use on a human is totally dependant on=20
consistency of gait, so likewise with a horse. Really it's measuring=20
the number of oscillations. We assume that one oscillation equals one=
=20
step, then multiply by the distance of the average step to get total=20
distance travelled.
=20
OK, so on horseback, what does an oscillation represent? I guess that=
=20
in a rising trot it's obvious, because of the gross movement of the=20
wearer's body. But what oscillations is it picking up at a canter? (O=
r=20
even, for Icelandics trekkers, at a tolt?) Are calculations based on=20
oscillations of the rider, or of the horse?.
=20
My guess is that with determination, and some trial and error to=20
calibrate it (differently for different paces), you could use it. =20
Because here in Wales most of our rides are on well-defined trails,=20
the pedometer stays at home, and I use a map. It's simpler!

For my birthday I got a pedometer. The givers intention was that it=20
could be used on my horse even though it is a human pedometer. Before I=20
open the package I would like to see if anyone has succussfully used a=20
human one on a horse. What if you change gaits a lot, is it still=20
acurate?

Lauren (who may take it back and buy something for the horse)
