AERC INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE NEWS

The AERC International Committee met via conference call July 30th to develop a
uniform policy for all zones in light of the recent changes to the Pan American
Entry List by the FEI.

At the July 14th meeting of the FEI Endurance committee in Great Britain, the
FEI committee decided that each country and each zone may double the number of
their entries from 6 to 12 (18 host zone). This decision was made to help
facilitate the World Cup Series as the Pan Am is also a World Cup Qualifier.

The AERC International Committee decided it is too close to the event to
reopen the nomination and selection process. The committee voted unanimously
not to reopen nominations.

The committee further voted unanimously NOT to change the squad sizes from
those originally allowed for the Pan Am Championship, ie. 6 per zone and 12 from
Pacific North. A number of very good reasons were given. Fundamentally, the
committee understands that it is unfair to the membership and especially the
nominees to change rules, terms or
conditions mid stream and especially this close to the event. Members made
their decision to nominated or not and then to compete for a place on their
squad with the understanding that each squad would have six members.
Furthermore, expanding the squad sizes would not help give the AERC membership
an equitable opportunity to participate in the WC series, as the Pan Am is NOT
an Open event.

The decision of the AERC International Committee will not change the Pan
American's designation by the FEI as a WC Qualifier.

At the AERC mid year Board Meeting, the board approved the AERC International
Committee's decision to donated $2000.00 to the Pan American Championship Event.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The AERC International Committee is accepting nominations to the USET
Endurance Discipline Committee. Nomination close November 15th and should be
submitted to the AERC International Committee Chair. By Dec 15th, the five
recommended names shall be submitted to the USET.

Nominations for the AERC International Committee are being accepted by the
AERC Office until October 31st. You must reside in the Zone for which you are
nominating. Elected members will serve two year terms.

The AERC International Committee is also soliciting nominations for the
position of International Committee Chair and Vice Chair. Nominations should be
submitted to the AERC Office and will close September 15th. The committee will
vote on the candidates and submit their recommendations to the AERC President
for appointment.

We are still accepting ideas for sites for the 1999 North American
Championships. Please submit your proposals by phone or letter to the
International Committee Chair or Vice Chair before Oct 1st.

AHSA NEWS

The 1998 World Equestrian Games in Ireland have been canceled for funding and
political reasons. FEI is working to move the 1998 WEG to Rome, Italy. The
probability is very good for this move to occur.

At the July 14th meeting of the FEI Endurance Committee in Cirencester, Great
Britain, the committee chair, Professor de Sanctis, informed our USA delegate,
Dr. Jerry Gillespie, that the AHSA does not have the authority to cancel the
designation of the Pan American Championship as a World Cup Qualifying Event for
the Final to be held in Qatar in November, 1997. It is a Pan American Games and
not just a USA event. Given this development, it is the AHSA's understanding
that since riders qualify to compete in the final based on points earned at
qualifying events in the series, the AHSA cannot deny them the opportunity to
compete in the final if they choose to do so. The World Cup final is not a team
competition for which riders are selected but a points driven series where
riders compete as individuals.

It is unusual for a World Cup Series to be announced within the year it is
taking place. In the future, it is our hope that the World Cup series is
planned by the FEI far enough in advance for the USA to sanction one or two OPEN
FEI sanctioned qualifiers so all riders have an equitable opportunity to
participate if they so choose.

If you have any questions regarding the World Cup Series, please contact
Andrea Moore at the AHSA, phone: 212-972-2472 ext:211.
