"Scratches" are a fungal infection. VERY nasty and VERY painful to the
horse. Often causes lameness from the pain and can cause the legs to swell
up all the way up to the elbow(I've SEEN it!!!). Often comes from wet grass
and mud where the fungus likes to grow. That's why keeping the areas clean
and dry will prevent it.
