I'd like to offer my heartiest congratulations!!!

This news also finally got me off the dime. Some of you may recall
that a year or so ago I asked for suggestions for a name for an award
for the horse that "does it all." Mike Tomlinson came up with the
suggestion "Perfect Ten Award" but I never submitted the proposal to
the AERC. Now that Rio qualifies, I've finally sent the letter. A
portion of it follows:

**********
=20
Dear Board Member,

=46or several years now I=92ve been intending to offer a new horse career
award to the AERC, that I would fund. I haven=92t done so because of my
natural procrastination, and because no horse was yet eligible to win
it. Now, there is such a horse: R.O. Grand Sultan (Rio). So, I=92ve
finally gotten off the dime and I=92m making the proposal.

The award would recognize a special kind of overall career excellence
=96 the horse that "does it all." To qualify, a horse has to accomplish
four "tens" in his career. Ten years of competition, ten thousand
miles completed, ten first places and ten Best Conditions. This
recognizes the horse that lasts year after year, mile after mile while
competing hard and winning both First to Finish and Best Conditions.

There would be some "fine print" on the qualifications. The ten years
would not need to be consecutive, and could be either calendar years
or AERC ride seasons. The 10,000 miles would be AERC endurance miles.
The ten Best Conditions would have to be in rides with at least ten
competitors =96 not necessarily ten horses standing for B.C. but at
least ten starting horses in the ride. The ten First Places would
have to also be against at least ten competitors; weight division or
junior division wins would count only if there were at least ten
starting horses *in that division.*

I said no horse has earned this award until last week. Well, not
exactly. Kahlil Khai met those qualifications nine years ago, the
first horse in history to do so =96 wherein lies part of my motivation
in offering this award, and offering to fund it. I would like to call
it the Kahlil Khai Perfect Ten Award.

By the way, my thanks to Mike Tomlinson for suggesting the name
"Perfect Ten" when I asked on the Internet for suggestions a year or
so ago.
