Jack Russell Terriers are wonderful dogs when their temperament and
energy are matched with the right owners. I know - I have one. However,
when I mentioned to the breeder that I might want to take it on slow
trail rides - like I do with my Aussies - she warned me that I was quite
likely to lose my dog. Many of them have strong hunting instincts and
will go to ground in a woodchuck hole and not come out. The handler has
to dig them out sometimes. Riding on horseback is not conducive to
following a small hunting dog intent on finding its quarry. Even with
one that generally follows the horse there is risk of coming upon some
animal and having the dog take off after it...
My Aussies, on the other hand, are very intent on 'taking care of the
Boss' much like the BC's in the movie, 'Babe'. They will take off after
sheep or cows but also have a 'stop' on them. They are easily managed.
Even with that, I don't impose my animals on other people who want to
ride with me. Finding other people who ride similar to us is too
difficult to spoil it by my dogs....
