My feeling from a rider's point of view is that riders will often run hard
early on and the horse shows it. Later, they will ease up and the horse can
recover, even out on the track.
Another point is that the horse's system takes maybe 50 miles of
competition to adjust and for all systems to come up to speed, so to speak.
After that the horse is probably running at a higher efficiency. Also a
psychological thing, the horse "settles down" into the work required.
Just my own experience from competing in and completing five 100 miles/1
day rides and four longer rides. I enjoy the longer rides the best.
