Delightful new horse!

Hello everyone,

Well, time to put up or shut up on this distance riding stuff.
Now I have the horse to do it with, so no more excuses! :-)
I'm pleased to report that last Friday I became the proud new
owner of Charlie, a 12yo, 14.2hh bay Arab gelding.

Charlie has been ridden by a local junior for the last couple of
years; she's done 50s with him. He's a dandy little guy with a good
personality and I think will do fine to get me started in NATRC and
endurance. I would like to inaugurate our distance career with the
Fireworks 30 this August. Charlie's in good shape already, I just
have to keep him there. It will be a major challenge to get ME
conditioned for the Fireworks. I am nowhere near ready for a hot
30-mile ride, at least if I want to be any help to my horse. (The
first half of the day is often cool and foggy, but what if it isn't?)
Well, back to the cardio-glide in the evenings, and more lunchtime
walks instead of sitting in front of the computer...

We did a poker ride on Saturday and Charlie had plenty of chances to
show if he was going to be spooky or silly. Nothing bothered him.
He has plenty of energy but it is controllable. Even when he was asking
to GO, he didn't try to pull my arms out of their sockets. I am told
he might be a tad more enthusiastic at races, though!

Goals right now are _extremely_ modest. Get rider in shape, do a couple
of LD rides and a NATRC, see if we can put to use all the great info
gleaned from this list. If rider survives and horse hasn't said "no way,
not with _you_ on my back," plan for more of both types of rides in '98.
My wildest dreams include a 50 next year.

We board at Lightfoot Stables in San Jose, California. Training rides
will be at local county parks. You can recognize us by Charlie's
long-suffering expression as I re-learn how to ride a trottin' horse
after 4 years of mostly Peruvians. :-)

YeeeHAH! <vbg>

and Picardia (recovering--I hope--from a tendon strain)
and Almendrado (still the #1 parade horse)
