Hi all,
I'm new on this list and even newer on endurance. So, I have the typical
beginners questions that I suppose are asked here every three weeks - maybe
there's a FAQ for beginners somewhere? I've read a little along on your
conformation etc.- debate; somthing that I guess will be my major
difference with 'normal' endurance horses. My horse Naomi is a typical
European WB (16.2 hh Selle Francais), but she has way too much blood and
character to be content with doing dressage and she hates jumping, unless
on trailrides ;-), she hardly pumps after two hours intensive (basic)
dressage riding, however, she sweats easily.
In Belgium there's an association that organises 'Raids' for beginners; 30
km to be ridden in about 2,5 - 3,5 hours, so that's reasonable. The winner
is the horse with the lowest hart pulse, it's only when there's an ex aequo
on that, that speed counts - I guess that's the surest way to prevent
newbies from doing unsafe things.
How can I prepare for such a raid for conditioning her (and me)? Within
this time limit, how much would the ratio walk/trot be? Should I change
what she eats now already (she's on 24/h pasture turnout now and gets a
little 'sporthorse' byfeeding)? Do horses always have irons? Special ones
for more comfort maybe? You see, questions, questions, questions...

TIA,
Inge
