urination problems

Hello campers!

I am briefly 'defecting' from euroenduro to pick your brains about a
problem (or hopefully not a problem) that I have.....

My 5 yo gelding is currently in training to do endurance rides (I
guess they're more like CTR's)....we have done two 'official' rides
so far..a 16.5 mile training ride (did OK) and a 15 mile training
ride (got lost so did ~ 22) both affiliated to the EHPS. In the 15
mile ride Basil (the nag) felt like he wanted to wee (he kind of
'rounds up' and gets a bit sluggish) and I took him to the grass on
the side and he ummed and ah'd but then took up the wee position but
didn't do anything! So I carried on riding and he seemed to forget
about weeing and got back to his normal self. After the ride I
thought he'd wee when we got back to the lorry. But he didn't (and he
didn't try either), so I thought he'd wee IN the lorry (on the straw)
but he didn't. When we got home I put him in his stable and he tried
to wee twice (in position) but no wee.....then he slept for an hour
and a half (standing up), woke up and did a perfectly ordinary wee.

I've been trying to train him by using voice commands and watching
him I am SURE he knows what I mean when I tell him WEEWOPS! but we
haven't quite got to the stage where he will do it yet (unless he
wants to). So I'd been saying weewops to him while trying to get him
to wee. Throughout his abortive attempst at urinating during the ride
(and after) all other things were normal (drinking water and
electrolytes, eating, HR, resp, temp, cap refill, skin tenting, gut
sounds, etc) and he was forward going on the ride and eager. Except
of course when he felt like he wanted to wee.....
He sweated a bit (but no more than usual) and therefore had a
recommended dose of electrolytes after the ride (he drank water
enroute, but not much) and ordinary water an hour after and some
more once he got home...

I did notice a slight erection when he was trying in his stable,
however...after sleeping he was normal when he unrolled his sheath
and did the wee.

He is not arab, but a cleveland bay cross welsh pony and is about
14.1 hh. We did/and have done similar rides at home and after some
deliberation over the exact spot he will wee (if he is desperate). He
wees more easily if he sees another horse doing it and will stop to
wee himself (before he feels desperate).

Anyone have any advice, info, thoughts on this? How are everybody
else's horses at this weeing thing? Are we in serious trouble?

Thanks to everybody (Wendy and all) who gave me advice at the start
of the year when I wanted to get started....!

Cheers!

Liz and Basil (the nag)
