In a message dated 97-05-15 16:30:23 EDT, you write:

<< Also, why are those of you out there with mares (retired or resting
endurance mares) breeding those animals. They must have traits that you
would like to see passed on in their offspring. If you didn't believe that
your mare would pass on something worthwhile, you would go out and buy a
foal that is already on the ground. >>

In a clinic given by Dr. Beeman DVM of Colorado, on conformation, at one
point Dr.Beeman asked the audience how many people were horse breeders. A
good portion of the audience raised their hands. Then he asked them, OK, how
many of you have a mare in your broodmare band who is there because she came
from "good blood", cost lots of money--but broke down under use?--the hands
went down, but you could see it in the eyes! And the fidgeting! Dr. Beeman
said, sighing, "It's all right--I've done it too--and we wonder that we don't
see more really well conformed horses! The answer is right there, folks."
This was an audience of mostly Quarter horse and TB people, but I think the
crime is commited across the board---
Dr. Beeman is a terrific speaker, I learned a TON!--anyone who has a chance
to hear him shouldn't waste it--
