white hairs

Has anyone ever heard of a horse's hair turning white from a reaction to
neoprene? I am posting this on behalf of a friend whose horse has a white
hair breastcollar and white hair girth. Now, I was inclined to believe it
was from pressure or rubbing of the breastcollar and girth, but as he is
shedding his winter coat, he also has white hairs down the backs of his front
legs in a "drip" pattern. Any ideas? Needless to say, on a dark chestnut
horse, this is unsightly. Any help would be appreciated.
