Questions on boots

I am in need of new pair(s) of boots that can accomodate a lot of walking
as well as riding. I have in the past ridden in cowbow boots which are a)
awful for walking both in terms of comfort and in terms of traction on
crossing streams on wet mossy covered rocks and b) not waterproof. I have
looked at Ariats. I am told that the insulated Ariats are very waterproof
but somewhat stiff to walk in. The tongue ends a short distance above the
instep which means waterproofing does not extend to stepping in the creek.
I have seen some packer boots (can't remember brand) that have higher
closed tongue but have been told that the boot is not as waterproof because
of the sole construction.

For summer use, I would accept a boot that is not at all waterproof, but
rather is designed to dry out quickly and not hold water (like a canvas
tennis shoe), but would still need a heel and good ankle support.

All advice and disagreements with above appreciated.
