Regarding miles--due to a trailer accident my horse David cut his nose
severely--right at the spot the halter lays across. There was no way we were
going to be able to trailer him after that--but fortunatly the camp were at
was "only" 15 miles from my home. I ride with an egg-butt snaffle, but my
bridle is western style with no noseband--right after the accident I had put
David's bridle back on so that nothing was touching the laceration on his
nose. I keep myself in shape--I'll lead him home. (He had just had the most
strenuous ride of the season so far--and up and down hills, which he isn't
used too--plus the blow up at hte trailer--he was tuckered, I didnt think it
fair to ride him another 15 miles--)
Let me tell you, walking 15 miles gave me a brand new appreciation for what
we ask our horses to do---!!!!
By the way, David is fine now. Vet will be out to take out the stitches
today---I had sent my friend on ahead to call my vet and have her waiting for
me when I got to the barn. My vet wanted to come out and meet me on the
road--but I knew I had to get David home first as even with tranquelizers
there would have been no way to trailer him because of the location of the
cut--he just couldn't wear any kind of a halter without tearing the flap of
skin hanging from his nose open even more. If I'd been 50 miles from home
instead of 15 the situation would have called for something different. My one
big concern is that the laceration doesn't scar across the bridge of his nose
there (it is right across the "arab bump"--a v-shapped cut, with the top of
the v pointing down)--as I fear that skin might always be weaker there--the
only thing I can think to do is buy one of those fuzzy halters---hopefully,
it will heal cleanly--
