I broke my gelding to hobbles prior to teaching him to drive (buggy). I
blanketed him, put shipping boots on, and a longe line which I held of
course. Did this in a soft deep sandy arena. Let him try taking a step or
two and he figured them out surprisingly fast. Amazing how fast they can
move with them. When we got this over I added a third - one back leg hobbled
to the center of the front two. He did a couple nosedives and then stood
stock still. Repeated this for a few days then went on to the introducing
him to the buggy and rigging. (Driving by the way was a great method for
bomb proofing this particular horse at least. Nothing like driving through
cow pasture with ruts, cows, tall grass etc - although this of course was at
the tail end of the training sessions. Great work out too.) Reminds me - we
need to do some hobble refreshers. Been a while. Great if they won't stand
still for clipping or whatever. Just hobble rather than fight them.
