The history of the WSTR (Tevis) includes a beginning with a bet whether a
horse could do it or not. Also, in the old Saddle Action Magazine
(for-runner to Trail Blazer from the 1970's) was a very interesting story
about a man who ran endurance races of 1000 to 3000 miles (continuous). He
rode an arab stallion and won every race he entered (including a 120 mile
relay race when HE was more than 100 years old).

The US gov't ran races in the early 1900's (forced marches) to test different
breeds. This story has been printed many times by many publications.
Although arabs excelled, they didn't win all the races.
