Shadow does lope with a lower heart rate then he trots. about 20-30
bpm slower.
after he has a good warm-up and are going along at the trot, when I
ask him to lope, HR goes up a few beats initially, then starts
dropping. Also, after about 2-3- hours on trail, Working HR will
drop quite a bit.

Usually starts the ride WHR, trot, aprox 140-150. After good
warm-up, WHR will drop to about 110-120 (for example). Then, after a
couple of hours, he will really loosen up and start having fun,
usually at my expense, but his HR does drop, usually will work at an
easy lope 90-100 bpm.

I am confident that my HRM is working as it does seem to match with
hills, wind, mud, etc..... everything except his lope.

New Subject: Wind as a conditioning tool. Notice how the WHR will
increase riding into a strong wind.
