preentering

As a manager of a ride where you may get 100 riders or iced out, I HATE
preentering riders!! 1. You have to keep up with entries for WEEKS prior
2. People invariably say "I mailed you my entry"
3. Then you have to deal with refunds
I would much rather just sit down and enter them all at once.....
As a rider, I HATE preentries. I do not know until we actually pull out of
the driveway if we will be there. Trucks break down, horses go lame, kids
get sick....now I don't mind at all the wonderful managers who cheerfully
give FULL refunds if I can't ride...but what a hassel for them!
As for preparation....I HAVE to prepare for many...three vets, organized
vet check, etc. And PRAY I break even!
Also, keep in mind, we don't feed everyone a big dinner, but we have pots
of chili for whomever wants some after the ride. Dinner is the only thing I
can think of that pre entering would make a big difference, unless it is
the number of vets.
One thing I have thought of that would be nice is to state on your entry to
have people just CALL and let you know. Another good idea I heard is to
preenter, but not send any money. I would think they might get a lot who
entered but didn't show, though. I'd sure rather have MORE riders than
expected than LESS!
Any other ideas out there?
