Evidently Steve has seen the actual text of the bill (which I have not),
and it sounds like Mr. Doolittle has thrown us a curve. If we have to
"eat" losing the protection that an historic designation might afford in
order to get the repair money, maybe we should hold out for a better
deal or else just raise the money ourselves.

Am I being too extreme? I have to say that if such is indeed the case,
Mr. Doolittle has only managed to confirm our suspicions about why No
Hands was not placed on the historic register by the BLM, even though it
clearly qualifies, and why it was closed to begin with, concerns about
"safety" to the contrary.

Mr. Doolittle continues to have a single-minded agenda: Flood the
American River Canyons above Auburn with a "multi-purpose" dam so that
his business constituents can get fat selling speedboats.

If he has his way, we can kiss the final third of the Tevis Trail (as we
know it) goodbye. No Hands Bridge would be "preserved" under 500 feet
of water and reservoir bottom silt. The new finish line for the Tevis
would probably have to be Foresthill, and to make up the 30 miles of
lost trail, we would move the starting line from Robie Park to Reno.
We'll just ride on the shoulder of I-80.

Frankly, my dear, I don't WANT a dam!

/Richard
