This line of thinking scares me. As "the next generation" I question
the wisdom of my elders who make these statements. I own, train and
compete with my monitor and use it for just that -- a tool. I've seen
too much inconsistency in readings over time that I do not depend on my
HRM. It is a reference tool for when I am mounted and moving, but I
always carry a stethoscope when I ride - I trust my ears,a good watch
and experience far more than electronics; the horse will give the rider
warning signs - many of which will show up long before the HRM will tell
you there is a problem. I see too many people who seem to ride entirely
based on the HRM and ignore the other signals the horse is providing.
Not everyone knows how to use the HRM, not everyone can afford one.
Should we also mandate a sports saddle because there is no tree to pinch
the withers? (uncomfortable for me) Mandate a certain horseshoe such as
Equithotics or Slypners because they reduce concussion? (not all can
afford them, they don't fit every horse) How about mandating that
everyone shall use a certain electrolyte? (not every horse reacts the
same to a particular formula)
Flame me if you like (i know how use the delete key), but please think
before blurting out we must do such-and-such; if you believe as such,
back it up with an argument. Last time I looked we still lived in a
democracy - not a dictatorship...
