Hi Julia,

I have the same problem with Mystery turning to come out of my slant
load trailer. I know what I need to do, just have not done it yet. It
is to find a two horse straight load for training him the John Lyons
way.

Part of the John Lyon's method of trailer loading is to allow the
horse to step in, step out, in, out etc many, many times. This teaches
the horse to back out of the trailer...just as important as going into
the trailer. I'm going to summarize these trailer loading steps real
soon (next week) and submit them for the FAQ's on the home page. Also,
look in archives under trailer loading for some great suggestions.

Even without doing this he is getting better about backing out. I
stand at the entrance and touch his shoulder with my crop as I move the
divider, asking him not to turn. I also have my hand on his hip. If
he doesn't understand and still turns I let him as I do not have that
rear tack as a problem. For you, I think it would be very important to
teach him to load and unload straight by borrowing a trailer, hooking
it up, and having him load/unload many times until backing out straight
is a habit.

Hope this helps.
PS,

I also untie his lead before I open the divider to let him out. He
knows he must be calm and not leaning etc or he just stands there a
while. He must be calm before that divider is moved for him to come
out, period.

Hope this helps.
