Two or three "incidents" with my horse convinced me that having a Bad Hair
Day as a result of wearing a helmet was better than being in a coma or
"brain" dead. I knew my horse that a helmet wasn't necessary. I won't
repeat these incidences as I believe I wrote about them in a posting
(Cabbages and Kings) in December. Summer or Winter the helmet goes on even
if we're only out for a "quiet" short ride. It does a wonderful job of
protecting my head from the low, overhanging branches and if one considers
that helmets are too hot then you can purchase a "head cooler" to wear under
your helmet from most any tack store. Some OCTRA riders obey the letter of
the law by wearing bicycle helmets but the safety standards for these
helmets are entirely different from the ASA standards for riding helmets.
0ne rider death or severe head injury in our sport could do an awful lot of
damage to it. Do all rides carry insurance?
I was glad to see Paul Fitzgerald's (I think) response about the UAE
Marathon Rides. Didn't like to butt in, but I did have a question about
American horses being imported to the East. How would horses raised in an
entirely different climate and conditions fare in the desert?? Not good I
think, but now it sounds as if they aren't actually being sent East. Who
knows!! But the whole issue does build a good case against money prizes and
marathon races.
Certificates are a nice way to show your 25 milers appreciation for turning
out - as one person suggested you can keep a scrap book or you could paper
your den or family room with them. Workers also should receive a
certificate to acknowledge their efforts.
