Again in the words of Robert Burns, "the best lain plan of mice and men
oft go asunder", in that one missed step can cause a horse to break down.
Assuming you're referring to the physical injury itself as we in TBland
think of it. There certainly wasn't any indication in the 5 generation
pedigree of Union City to point to him as a potential multi-million dollar
3 y.o. on a one-way road to destruction. But if you mean 'break down" in
terms of poor finishes and bad production, perhaps it's merely a matter of
training and having nothing to do with genetic prepotency? Personally I'd
make an informed guess, either that factor or simply bad luck is more
often then not the case in that specific reference. In my old Arab's
chronic suspensory problems, I'd have to readily admit that the first
injury, costing almost a year was due to the bad luck of stepping where
the earth wasn't. The second incident was, probably, me as a trainer
bringing him back too quickly, too underprepared. Thereby embracing both
examples. He could have almost as easily broken down requiring ultimate
destruction rather then merely pulling the suspensory twice. (perhaps?)
