Riding in a halter

Those posts about how someone should be able to go out and ride
trail in a halter need to tempered with a little bit of caution. Someone
is going to go out and try it without thinking. I agree that any well
trained horse should be able to be ridden in a halter. I work on this
myself. But this should not be done out on trail!. I took my halter
rideable horse on trail and was doing great - even towards home.
Then a dirt bike, which normally isn't scary, came out of nowhere.
My horse took off!. Only the good luck of having a steep hill close
by saved me that day. Who knows what could have happened on a
flat trail?
Horses are flight animals and even the
best trained horse in the world becomes a hazard if something spooks
it. A bridle/hackamore may be the only device able to safely steer an
out of control animal until the spook wears off.
