Megg has been teaching me Parelli and Lyons methods on creating a soft horse
that gives to pressure. All her horses are ridden in a Parelli
halter/bridle. No bit, looks like a rope knot halter, with the cotton rope
reins hooked on like a bosal + reins would hook. First you teach the horse
on the ground, to give to pressure on each side. When you can
non-forcefully get your horse to bend his head and neck all the way to both
sides you teach them the emergency stop method. Now I am a rookie at this
but this is what I see. On one side only you will teach the stop cue. Megg
strokes here hand 1,2,3 strokes up the rein, standing at the shoulder, and
then holds her hand in a contact position until the horse gives to this
pressure. You do this 1,2,3 stroke then contact to pull the horses head
around for emergencies only. You are not actually pulling the head around
because a soft horse will give you his head and recognise the 123 cue once
they've practised it enough.

>I know this works because I've had to use it on the trail with Megg's 16.3
calvary breed Morgan. Buck used to be a run a way. We ride him in a rope
bridle now. On the way back in if you canter some he gets really on the
muscle and will sometimes test a new rider he isn't used to, ME! So we are
in the midst of this arguement and Megg says do emergency cue. 123, he
stopped just like that! From borderline out of control to stopped! Pretty
neat stuff. The whole purpose is to disengage their gate to a stop. If you
disengage the front or the rear end of your horse they will stop.

>So my firm belief is you shouldn't take your horse, throw a hackamore,
bosal, or any type of bit free configuration on them and go for a ride
without first doing your ground work. Safety for horse and rider first,
then you'll have comfort.
