Hackamores vs. bits

I am under the impression that a hackamore is more beneficial than a bit
during a ride because it allows the horse to eat/drink more freely than with
a bit. Is this true or doesn't it matter?

I am thinking about trying one. I have never used one before. How much
control do you have with a hackamore? I am currently using a (mild) D-ring
snaffle, so how does it compare to that? (I don't want to be run away with!)

A friend loaned me a hackamore to try - I'm not sure what kind but it has a
coated nylon rope over the nose, a chain underneath, and a "D" configuration
as the metal side pieces. It doesn't have shanks as I have seen on some
varieties. Also - how do you properly fit a hackamore?

I just got my AERC Convention notice in the mail today & saw that this was a
topic for one of the featured speakers. Is anyone going that could send me
their notes?

P.S. The bridle I am using is the kind with the removeable bit hangers. I
know I could take the bit out at pit stops, but that doesn't help for along
the trail. Truthfully, I rarely take advantage of it because it is too
difficult to get it back in my horse's mouth.
