Natural Glo

I've received several e-mail inquiries since I mentioned Natural Glo
rice bran. Rather than respond to each individually, I thought I'd
share with the entire group in case anyboy else is interested. (FYI
for those of you also on rec.eq - this is pretty much a duplicate
of my recent post there on the Options to Grain thread, so don't
bother to read it twice.)

I'll post (below) some of the info received a few months ago from
the manufacturers of Natural Glo stabilized rice bran when I was
doing research. We've used it for several years with great results
based on trainer and vet recommendations, but I finally got more
curious about *why* it was working so I could with some degree of
intelligence compare it with other / new products! :)

Natural Glo is a powder. Most horses will eat it straight, others
prefer it mixed with something else or sprinkled over their hay. To
me, the 20% fat content is an important factor. =20

I hope that others will provide some details on some of the other
products / options available, or toss in a few educated thoughts
about balanced equine nutrition in general based on contemporary
research results.

Some of the important contents are:

Crude Protein min 13%
Crude Fat min 20%
Crude Fiber max 8.5%
Biotin 0.03 mg/lb

Others on the contents list are: ash, calcium, phosphorus,
magnesium, potassium, copper, iron, selenium, beta carotene,
vitamins D & E, niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, amino acids (lysine,
methionine, tryptophan, valine).

Below are a few paraphrases & quotes from what they faxed me:

- Natural Glo is a natural fat, protein, vitamin and mineral
supplement. Fat gives 2.25 times the energy produced by
carbohydrates or protein, and is the most important missing
ingredient in most horse diets.=20

"I'm a real fan of Natural Glo, your stabilized rice bran product.
There are several reasons, but primarily I like the natural fat
source while being highly palatable." Jerry Black, DVM
Pioneer Equine Hospital, Oakdale, CA

- All-in-one supplement recommended for use by people feeding
performance horses, halter horses, hard keepers, grain intolerant
horses, broodmares, young or aged horses.

- When fed alfalfa and grain or a grass hay mix, horses get almost
no fat in their diet. NG provides a natural fat level of 20%. 440
I.U. of vitamin E (included) helps utilize the fat more effectively.

- Minimum Phosphorous (important with broodmares & foals)=20

- a vegetable fat that is easily digestible (do NOT feed with corn
or other oils. Corn oil prevents complete digestion.) =20

- horses on alfalfa / alfalfa + grass blends - NG helps offset the
calcium-phospohorous imbalance ... additional grain rations can be
greatly reduced or eliminated. Feed 1/2 - 1 1/2 lbs NG per day to a
mature horse, depending on the horse's activity. (1000 lb horse)

- horses on coastal bermuda or most grass hays - most of the time
additional grain rations should be reduced 25-50%. Maintenance dose
of NG for a mature horse is 1-2 lbs / day depending on the horse's
activity. (1000 lb horse)

- Using essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, NG saves time
and eliminates the mixing of several supplements=20

- 1 year shelf life. @ $2.10 / horse / week for a maintenance dosage

Wolcott Farms also carries a product called GroStrong (by
Moorman's). There are 2 versions (one with higher percentages) of
GroStrong containing additional minerals and vitamins. The page they
faxed me indicated a western region formula. I don't know if they
have other regions available.

Hope this info is useful, and I look forward to reading about other
options or comments on balanced nutrition according to current
recommendations from the experts.
