Definitely stretch the leg. You said the injury is in the rear so I'm
assuming its a hamstring. The stretch shloud be performed with you supporting
the leg from the hock DO NOT STRECTH FROM THE HOOF. Slowly take the leg
forward until you feel the first resistance, wait for the tendon to relax and
then conitinue to go to the next resistance, DO NOT JERK OR GO TOO FAST.
Stretching will help to organize the fibers and will reduce any possible
errant growth of scar tissue. I would also do a crossfiber massage or simply
rub ie. from inside to outside, after the heat is out of the area.
I just finished working with a horse that was doomed to be "just a broodmare"
by the Vet. because of a hamstring tear that went haywire. After 3 Sessions
of Rolfing and MORE IMPORTANTLY STRETCHING she back to jumping and getting
ready to event this summer. So, stretch intelligently, while your at it do
some stretching yourself.
