An observation from an outsider. It seems there is already some money in
the sport. Haven't I seen product endorsements from endurance riders? Top
sports figures often make as much from side deals as from winnings
(salaries). The question then is where and how do you draw the line. The
money has drifted into many amatuer sports (past tense). Any attempts to
stop it have usually pushed it under the table until it finally stank so
badly, it was legalized.

How about some rules that will create a real incentive for horse longevity.
A holdback (in escrow) of 50% of the winnings for 5 years and a
requirement that the horse be sound at that time. I am sure that this one
could be massaged and that this group could probably come up with more (and
better) ones.
