re: Cash Prizes

I have been following the debate over the Cosequin Challenge with grat
interest, and as opinions have been solicited, will add mine to the pile.

I don't see much of a difference between an expensive prize, such as a
horsetrailer, and cash.

Big money sponsors have been involved with rodeo and profesional barrel
racing for a number of years, without appreciable problems that I have seen.
There are still a lot of local play-days and local rodeos, maybe even more,
since people in these sports have a higher level to aim for.

I *really* liked the idea of having a wonderful prize, such a a saddle or
horsetrailer, and having a drawing from it from all who completed the ride.
I think this sort of thing would stimulate a lot of interest, not only in
competing, but in good horsemanship necessary for completion. Sending the
prize home with the BC rider still encourages speed.

Spending $30,000 a specific high-level ride limits the benefit to
relatively few riders, while the same money spent on trail preservation and
equine research has the potential to benefit all.

There's my tuppence worth.
