It sure helps you & the horse!

     1) Take lessons (dressage or centered riding (fancy name for dressage
     for trailriders))
     2) Ride
     3) Walk a lot
     4) Ride even more
     5) Run or jog
     6) Ride more yet

Throw in a few stairs, and you've basically described my "program,"
but I always think I should be doing more specific strength training,
particularly for the quadriceps ("quads") and adductors. Lots of trail
riders also "work out" at the gym and do strength training. Matthew
M-S says back up to a walk and slowly lower yourself into a "sitting"
position -- try it and you'll see how fit/unfit your quads are!

Would love to hear more simple, do at home exercises along these
     lines.
