Susan, congradulations on your first completion...always the most
exciting. Just want to let you know that when my horse did his first race,
he was a total idiot. I loaded up a docile lazy, plod along and when I
opened the door to that trailer out came a raving lunatic. He did
everything but foam at the mouth. I spent 20 min. with him bucking at the
end of a lunge line with water bottles flying every which way. People were
pulling up chairs to watch. I was not excited about climbing on his back. I
let him move out and didn't fight with him till the edge was off, 5-7 miles
then he settled down.
Next ride, same scenario but only 10 min. of aerobatics on the lunge line.
After about 4 rides, he became calmer (notice I said calmer, not calm) as he
knew what he was in for. A green horse (first ride) is caught up with all
the excitement and energy going around and is unsure about what is going
on. I took my horse to a couple of rides just to observe and get use to the
goings on before his first ride. He probably would have been worse, if I
hadn't. Your horse will become more managable after awhile...good luck.
