I have been a subscriber to the digest for about four months and have
seen some things that made me wince, but Patricia Chase's comments about
lawyers takes the prize. I am a lawyer, and proud of it. I am also a
horse owner, endurance rider, and AERC member. Riding my horse through
the woods and along the bayous near downtown Houston is joy to me -- but
it's not something I take for granted. Maybe Ms. Chase is unaware that
many of the benefits she enjoys as a rider and endurance competitor --
access to trails, safety standards, laws protecting her as a horse
owner, laws protecting horses from abuse -- are the result of efforts by
lawyers, efforts that ensure that she and others who love horses will
continue to have somewhere to ride. But beyond that, it's pretty sad
when someone has to stoop to opining that an entire group of people
should be excluded based simply on their profession. Unfortunately for
Ms. Chase, her comments reflect more on her than on the lawyers she's
excoriating. And they are certainly not worthy of a horseman and an
athlete.
