Muscle laceration injury (healed) ok for endurance?

I have a 14 yr. old Morgan whom I was beginning to train for endurance
last fall, when he had a wire accident and ripped his shoulder
muscles from the curve of his lower humerous halfway to his knee. It
was a long healing process with lots of saline/Betadine flushes (five a
day for 4 months!) and miraculously most of the muscle reattached, while
the gravity gap actually grew some new muscle. He now has no lameness,
although I have not ridden him on long rides, and he did drag the hoof
for a while, but with exercise he has begun to pick it up in a more
normal step.
My question is: Has anyone out there heard of similarly injured horses
being able to compete in endurance rides? We'd obviously want to start
with a 25 mi. ride. Are there any vets out there who have seen this
sort of situation? Am I crazy to think he could do this?! "Bones" has
a lot of heart and would love endurance. I'm not into winning, just
dying to do endurance with this horse!
Thanks for any input.
