For your very first 25 mile endurance race, I would highly recommend doing
it at a competitive pace of about 6 mph, IF the terrain is not too
demanding. That means you should aim for a 4-4.5 hr window. But
remember, you have 6 hours--if you need it, use it!

Too fast, in my opinion is anything less than 3-3.5 hours!!!

And if at midpoint you find that the pace is too fast, spend some extra
time, let your horse rest and relax--you do not have to leave at the
allotted time.

For my first ride I always aim for the turtle award...that way I know
I'll have some horse left for that day--and all the days that follow!
