Yes, unfortunately we must do a 4 mile stretch of macadam/gravel road to
reach the State Game Lands. So that's 8 miles total before/after the "real"
work. Also most of our small loops are tar and chip interspersed
with some fields/woods--but not nearly enough! A problem with living in
an urbanized area.

We tend to do a lot of walking, very SLOW trotting, on this surface.
Yes, it does chew the shoes up and we need to keep a smear of borium on
the heels on the hind feet for some semblance of traction. We try to
move out on the berm, but these are "country" roads with little or no
non-road surface on which to ride--and you dare not go in planted fields
around here!

Hope the Equithotics help...I'd like to know what you think of them.
Personally I can't see spending $90 just for shoes that may not make it
through 50 miles.
