We are going to offer the *user* (EPT) modifed Radio shack indoor-outdoor
thermometer I wrote about a few years ago and mentioned to a few riders. We
have been using a *sealed* unit for thepast 2 years. It worked great. Our
water-resistant modifcations worked. We used it for the past year on almost
all our HOT rides. No water damage.
In fact the current comercial unit resulted from my newsletter article where
I posted the following info.
You can do it your self.
get a RS I/O temp unit. the lowest cost one without the clock
Set the unit for OUTSIDE monitoring so the PROBE sensor is active.
Seal ALL the holes and seams with RTV Silicon. Including battery
Coil the LONG lead ,do not cut, and tie off all but 24 inches.
Get a soft clear plastic pouch with a flap
Put the unit in the pouch with lead probe routed to the outside
Seal the pouch
Hang on from of saddle figure that out
put probe under pad anyplace seems to work as long as it is fully under the
pad
find all the articles from TB mag about using the tool info is correct.
The unit is about 1.5 deg off the rectal temp..you can check by riding about
an hour get the horse hot and take the temp..compare
