0.3 mg selenium per kg dry matter of feed each day is adequate for
horses. Sodium selenite or selenate are both good sources. Thw whole
blood (not serum or plasma) must be analyzed for an accurate test:

deficient:.096-.160 ppm (wet wt)
adequate: .170-.250 ppm
toxic: 1.1-+ ppm (toxicities up to 6.3 ppm have been seen in equine
blood)

Newborn adequate levels are 50% that of adults**
Supplementation with Se is beneficial in deficiencies, but excess Se
has never been shown to affect muscle or membranes....Lynn
