It is not unuasual for the average vet not to understand what goes into
conditioning an endruance horse. Last year when I laid Misty up for a
couple months (minor injury), the vet said I could start back light work.
To her light work was a couple miles at a walk. When I told her that Misty
didn't get loosen up and work out the cob webs until about 5 miles she seem
perplexed. I then explained the normal routine - stretching, brisk walk
for about a mile, easy trot for a couple miles warming up to doing some
"real riding".

She told me that by the time my horse was warmed up most other horses she
sees have finished their workout. We then developed a workload to bring
the mare back. I think we have to work with our vets since they don't all
understand what endurance is.
