A group of research vets published their work in 1993 in hopes of
prividing optimum crew support for the '96 olympic XT team. I've
forgotten the name of the organization, I'm sure Mike Tomlinson knows.
The results were also published in Horseplay magazine. They found no
adverse effects according to exhaustive studies from applying very cold
water to heavy muscle tissue in the haunches and hindquarters in general.
Claiming absolutely no link from cold water in those areas and tying up.
In the fit horse they reported the belief to be myth.

I respect the panel and the methods used, ie, test groups, mean groups
etc. I did read about it when first published. Still I haven't and still
continue to restrict the water applied to my endurance horses while hot
in the heavy muscle tissue areas discussed.

Hope this helps.
