FWIW, if someone goes to the "Alta Vista" search engine and web page, there
is some interesting descriptive material available. In their case, they
apparently loaded the search engine with a couple of thousand URL addresses.

The search engine then goes out and checks these addresses. While there it
looks for any pointers to other places. It then follows these pointers.
When it gets to those locations it repeats the process. Lo and behold, it
is plausible that the search engine will find every URL on the Internet.

However, that is over statement. If you read their documentation more closely,
there are certain cases where pointers exist but they do not follow through
to see what is available.

Also if a URL address has no-one pointing to it and that address is not in the
original several thousand, it will probably remain isolated and unreachable
via the search engine.

In addition, when the first pointer from a known location (to the search engine)
is found that points to a previously unknown URL, it may have been several
days since this link was established. Even though the search engine is
pwerful, it does take time. It appears that it does this searching continuously.

As it finds all this information, it apparently stores it where it (the search
engine ) now has ready access to it. When someone uses the search engine to find
something such as Orthoflex it is my impression that it is simply a case
of looking the information up rather than going out on the Internet and doing
the search in real time.

Well, since this is the endurance mailing list, how many people have shown
the endurance to read this posting thoroughly. :-) (Might be interesting
to see how many answers I get to that question.)

Enough/Too much for now
