We just lost a horse to acute coloc. We had taken her to Univ. of
Florida vet. hospital. They did an autopsy and found a large enterolith
(sp.?) , or stone completely blocking her large intertine. I have since
been reading about this (seems it more common in Arabs and part- arabs than
any other breed-- maybe because they are more curious and may injest
something they shouldn't?) and have seen people suggest giving horses 1/2
cup of apple cider vinegar a day as a preventative. Also, one suggested
using the apple cider vinegar from the health food stores that have the
"mother" in it. Any advice on this?
Also, one of our other Arabs has melanoma, so I am concernd that
acidifying his insides may do his more harm that good (based on the idea
that Tagamet that lowers stomach acid has helped some horses with
melanoma). My current vet recommends NOT removing the melamona due to the
idea that operationg can cause the whatever to migrate and start somewhere
else. WHat do you vets think about that. He has 5. from the size of a
wlnut, to a golfball size for the 1 large one. He's 9 years old. We had
the first 3 removed and they grew back, but not so large (when he was 3).
Thanks!
