[endurance] 50 mile training

I have been following the discussion on how easy it is to train for a
50. I wish that some of the pleasure riders in my club could hear
you talk! It DOES take some dedication - don't sell you or your
horse short. You are both putting in alot of effort in order to be
able to compete & complete.

On the other hand -- don't underestimate the 50 mile rides just
because they are not 100 mile rides! Your horse is putting out a
great effort in a 50 and can experience some real complications
(lameness, metabolic disorders, muscle/back pain, fatigue). This is
still serious business, even during training rides. I have heard of
more instances of lameness related to training than I do related to
rides. Your horse can still have metabolic problems on an off day
during a training ride, too.

Don't forget that they have "bad days" just like we do. They may feel
"icky" or "down" on a day that WE conveniently scheduled to ride.
How do you feel if you ride the day before you break out w/ the flu?
You don't look sick, but you start feeling lousy!

OFF THE SOAP BOX. Remember that even a short 25 mile ride can be
physically taxing and potentially complicated.
