We also have this version. Works great on our mare, very
intermittently on her son. I think this is because his saddle sits very
far back and the girth is far back on the saddle, so when the electrode is
under the girth it isn't near his heart! We now have to have the
girth quite loose also, so we can't attach the electrodes anyway.

Incidentally what appears to be the same model, but with human fittings is much
cheaper. I think I have seen them for under 100 pounds in bike shops.

Yes, you can use them in competetion in the UK (both EHPS and BHS,
and I assume SERC).
